Research and a voice for science

Helena B. Nader combines biomedical research, training scientists and leadership in Brazilian scientific institutions. She describes continuing her laboratory work while serving as president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Her perspective brings together the questions researchers ask at the bench and the support needed to keep research going.

Understanding the experiment behind the kit

Nader remembers searching for papers in libraries and carrying out laboratory steps by hand. New tools have changed that work, but she worries that students can learn to operate a kit without understanding the reactions it uses. She sees explaining those underlying processes as a responsibility of supervisors, so that convenience does not replace understanding.

Choosing the laboratory

Interested in several subjects, she found career tests less useful than experiencing research. Early laboratory work persuaded her to remain in biomedical science rather than move into medicine. She describes supportive parents and teachers and says she did not doubt that she belonged. Her invitation to younger listeners includes both excitement and difficult days: experiments can fail, and returning to a problem may reveal a mistake or another approach.
